Digging Deeper Jazz Workshop (4 May classes) - $120
*IMPORTANT NOTE: This is a one-time purchase for all 4 classes (please see schedule below). The purchase of this package is dated for May 6, 2021 because that is when the series of 4 classes begins. To sign up for ALL FOUR classes, please select MAY 6TH to complete your registration.*

It’s a crazy time in human history. Musicians all over the world are not jamming, not going to concerts, not attending their rehearsals, and not getting to connect with each other. It’s a sad time for many of us. Music, and especially jazz, is an "in-the-moment" kind of thing. It requires a push and pull, an engaged communication. Let’s keep our music rolling with Digging Deeper Jazz Workshops.

Each workshop includes prep work sent out in advance (videos and written material). There are also plenty of opportunities for follow-up and staying connected with Jeff and with each other after the workshop. Prepare to have fun, learn a ton, and meet some amazing musicians like yourself from around the world.

May 6 - Rhythmic Soloing - Displacement and Groupings
May 13 - Saxophone - Harmonics, Tone and Flexibility
May 20 - Cadenzas and Solo Breaks
May 27 - Voice Leading and Guide Tones

I’ve done these workshops over the past year in various cities around the USA and Canada, and now I’m thrilled to open them up to adult amateur and semi-pro musicians across the world. Our “Live and Online” Zoom conference format is something I’ve used extensively, and it works fantastically for this type of class interaction.

How It Works:
We get together on a video call, where everyone can see and hear each other. I send you a little information and a video ahead of time to help you get ready (if you choose to do so). And then, we dig in. I share the concepts for the workshop of the day, and then I play for you, AND you have the opportunity to play for me. We ask and answer questions, and it’s an interactive experience where you can be heard, be supported in your practice, and leave inspired.

Timing:
The workshop is from 1pm - 2:15pm EST (New York Time). The good news is that if you can’t join us for the entire class, we can send you the recording or the workshop, along with all of the material we’ll cover.

Nuts and Bolts:
The workshops are a maximum of 15 participants, so that we can really have some good quality time together. The audio and video from the workshop will be shared with you afterwards, so you can refer back to the workshop whenever you like. Our participants find incredible value in the Digging Deeper Jazz Workshops, and I’m thrilled to be able to offer them to you.

Cancellation Policy:
This is a limited offer and availability is on a first-come, first-served basis. If you need to cancel at any time, for any reason, you will not be refunded, but 1) we are happy to send you the recording of the workshops, or 2) you may have the opportunity to apply a credit toward a future workshop. With specific questions or needs regarding this policy and/or service, please email us at diggingdeeperjazz@gmail.com.
Digging Deeper Jazz Online Workshop May 6th, 1 - 2:15pm EST - Rhythmic Soloing - Displacement and Groupings - $35
As much attention as chords, scales and melody are given, music is as much about rhythm as anything else. All the styles we call “jazz” really prioritize the rhythmic side of things, so we jazz students should too! In this workshop, we’ll dig into one fascinating and immediately useable way to play rhythmically, the idea of learning to work with rhythmic groupings and with displacement. A mind opening journey, with a lot of powerful applications!

Digging Deeper Jazz Online Workshop May 13th, 1 - 2:15pm EST: Saxophone - Harmonics, Tone and Flexibility - $35
The saxophone is an incredible instrument with endless varieties and options regarding our tone and sound. However, this is both good news AND bad news! Learning to tame our horn is the first step, and then digging into all the saxophone’s wonderful depths of expression is the next. In this workshop, we’ll look at exercises and applications to get you sounding in control, in tune, and beautifully expressive.

Digging Deeper Jazz Online Workshop May 20th, 1 - 2:15pm EST: Cadenzas and Solo Breaks - $35
The history of improvised jazz is filled with amazing solo breaks and astounding cadenzas, played on all instruments, and in all eras. But what are the rules to this sort of playing, and how do we even get started? In this workshop, we’ll look at some classic examples of this sort of playing, and some immediately usable strategies and exercise to get us up and running quickly.

Digging Deeper Jazz Online Workshop May 27th, 1 - 2:15pm EST: Voice Leading and Guide Tones - $35
There is no more powerful tool for improvisers of all levels than Voice Leading. This is what helps a novice begin to move from “playing correct notes” to actual musical expression, and it is what helps an advanced player find new and novel ways to get through a tricky set of chord changes. It is impossible to spend too much time on this idea, but it’s very possible to get bogged down, bored and confused. We’ll get you moving, using the classic Duke Ellington song “Prelude To A Kiss” as our laboratory.
